Insight: February Edition

Our Insight video series will help you master digital manufacturing. Every Friday we’ll post a new video – each one giving you a deeper Insight into how to design better parts. We’ll cover specific topics such as choosing the right 3D printing material, optimising your design for CNC machining, surface finishes for moulded parts, and much more besides.

Below is a recap of our latest Insight videos, which you can also view alongside all of our previous videos on our website. Never want to miss an Insight video? Subscribe here!

Insight: Core and Cavity Placement

When designing for rapid injection moulding, one of the main goals is producing quick and clean parts. In this video we will talk about core and cavity placement, or rather placement of the outside enclosure and the inside. We’ll discuss considerations such as designing for holes, tabs or strips sticking up from the part or spanning an internal hole and surface texturing.

Insight: Moulded in Clips

Every time an injection moulded clip gets used, the material it's made from suffers a little bit of stress as it bends and then snaps back into place. This video looks at stress on plastic clips and how material choice, arm length, hook size, and draft can contribute to the effectiveness of a clip.

Insight: Complex Features in Moulding

Plenty of parts we build need complex detail if they’re going to do what we want. In this video we go through some of the more complex features, including clips, pickouts, gears and internal bayonet features, to show you how to make them work with a bare minimum of fuss.

Insight: Ejector Pins

Ejector pins are the silent helpers of the injection moulding world. They’re utterly vital to the process of creating parts, but if all goes well, they leave barely a mark on them. Sometimes this is not the case and there can be a bit of evidence left behind. In this video we talk about how design and position can minimise this kind of thing, considering shape and specific qualities of the part.
